Western saddles are built on a "sidebar" tree, with shaped seat styled for comfort and security. The rear edge of the bars projects beyond the cantle and is covered with a leather "jockey".

COMBINATION SADDLE

built on the western sidebar tree but with an "English look" exterior (such as the vintage Whitman or modern American-made Wayne Steele "English Pleasure" models) may be considered an English Pleasure saddle when used with English style girth and stirrup iron. It is not suitable for hunt or jumping. The combination saddle may also be used as a Western Pleasure saddle when it is fitted with Western stirrup, girth and saddle pad.
